I have a department line that needs to be on 8 phones and ring on all 8 phones before forwarding to the on-call person's cell phone. Is there a way to do this without putting it as their second line on their 7960 phones? Is there an issue with the pick up of this line when multiple people try to pick up the call on that extension?
What you are looking for is a broadcast ring....this currently cannot be done with CM. CM 4.0 will have improvements in the area. At this point you will need to take a second line on the phone. Berbee has a HuntGroup app that will do this for you if you are interested. http://phone-xml.berbee.com/HuntGroup_Main.html
If you have 7960's and they have the available lines then you can create a share hunt group for that. Assign 2 or 3 lines that are shared on all 8 phones and configure line 1 to CFB to line 2, line 2 to CFB to line 3. If you need more then that you could go to using attendant console as a simple ACD.
Hi, we use a system like this in house here. What we do is create a second line appearance on all department phones (shared line). All the users primary lines are in the same pickup group as the shared line. When a call comes in on the shared line, any of the users can do a pickup on the line, leaving the shared line free. If no one answers we divert to voice mail, but equally CFNA on the shared line could be set to a mobile.
It's not elegant, but it does the job. Oh for a simple ring group!
To add to bianderson's solution. I have done this at a few places and the only problem I was running into was if someones primary line was ringing at the same time the main line was ringing the callers were sometimes picking up the wrong call. To get around it I added a Pickup Group that only contained the main number that appears on each phone. Then, instead of hitting the PickUp softkey, they hit the GroupPickup softkey and enter the two digit pickup group number.

The below trick might come handy when you have to add a new node to a cluster but you don't have or is unsure of the security password for the publisher. This procedure has been around for ages.
