Digital and SMTP networking

We are designing a solution for unity servers across WAN. Each site has two CCM and one UNity. I think we may use digital networking to connect both Unity servers. Cisco documentation mentions Unity server will automatically replicate directory if they share one global directory.Does that mean MS AD will replicate LDAP database , or Unity itself can replcate directory including users' extension? If it's the second case, it makes sense. Thanks a lot. <br><br>

Unity doesn't actively connect or replicate information on it's own... it uses Exchange 5.5 or AD's directory replication functionality to do the work for us. Subscriber and location object information go into the directory and then replciate around like any other object in the directory. Each Unity server is watching the directory for objects it cares about (i.e. subscribers and location objects from other Unity boxes on the network) and keep track of them it it's own local SQL database.

Hi Jeff

But I am still wondering how local Unity server knows remote IP phone extension even after replication if I want to forward a message from local IP phone to remote IP phone which is controlled in another UNity . My understanding is Unity has to know there is an extension configured in the unity before it can forward a call.

you're mixing terms here... forwarding MESSAGES has nothing to do with forwarding CALLS... you mention both.

Please read the networking overview documentation you can get off the general tools page of AnswerMonkey and/or review the networking documetnation from the tech pubs folks that ships with Unity. Here's a link to the latest for 3.1(3):

I think the tech pubs documentation will cover all your questions.

The user's extensions (up to 10) replicate around with their user information. These are some of the items involved in the schema extensions we apply. As such all Unity systems on the network will know what the extension numbers of all Unity subscribers on any Unity server anywhere on the network is. You can forward messages using their extension or spelling their name over the phone since Unity will be able to find them in the directory by either.

In addition to the networking docs that Jeff mentioned, take a look at White Paper: Cisco Unity Data and the Directory at http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/voice/c_unity/whitpapr/datadir.htm. This doc lists the Unity-specific attributes that are stored in either Active Directory or the Exchange 5.5 directory.

Question about networking..

2 CM Clusters, 2 Unity servers. Both are in same AD domain, one is in main domain, one in a child domain.

I'm am getting some mixed information from the networking document. If I am reading it correctly, in order to allow dial-by-name on one unity server to find a user on another unity server, I have to create an internet subscriber pointing to the user on the remote server?

no, you do not have to do this if the Unity servers are in the same directory (i.e. in AD in the same forrest in Exchange 5.5 in the same organziation). Both Unity servers should populate their global subscriber tables with users from the other boxes automatically.

I'm not sure where the messages are getting mixed (please point out to us anywhere this is unclear)... This is sort of the central theme of the networking overview document. You would only need to use blind addressing or proxy users (internet subscirbers) in the case where Unity servers are not in the same directory.
