We have an application that makes CDO calls to exchange and causes a field to be reset randomely. We haven't identified this app yet and I wanted to know if unity was using CDO to access exchange. We have unity 2.4.6-161 and 3.1.5
The ViewMail clients in a Unity UM environment require that CDO be installed on the client machine for ViewMail to be installed. I think that th CDO is only used in the installation process. Additionally, it's not used by the Unity server.
As long as changes that another application makes do not affect the MAPI properties that Unity reads, it should be OK.
Other than VMO install which Steve mentions the only other use of CDO in and around Unity that I know of is the Message Store Manager tool uses CDO for getting at user mailboxes and the like if you have that setup on your 3.1(5) system - other than that I don't know of any other uses of CDO.
