Active Voice didn't have their own fax server, they OEMs Interstar's LightningFax for a while there which is probably what you're thinking of (this was called ActiveFax and shipped with versions up to Unity 2.4.6).

Here's the list of currently tested and supported 3rd party fax servers for all Unity products:

Captaris RightFax Version 6 or higher
Esker FaxGate Version 7 or higher
FAXCOM for Exchange Version 6.19 or higher
Fenestrae FAXination Version 4 or higher
Interstar LighteningFax Version 5.5 or higher
Omtool Fax Sr. Version 3 or higher
Optus FACSys Version 4.5 or higher

If you search around out here, though, you'll see information about how you can test with other fax servers (it's pretty easy) if the customer has a product that isn't on this list.

A great place to check out what we do support Cisco Unity 3.0 with is here: http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/voice/c_unity/sysreq/index.htm " target="_new">http:// http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/voice/c_unity/sysreq/index.htm . These are the integrations which we have tested with and set things up so we recognize the fax message class.

In order to qualify for support*, the Fax Server must provide three key features:
1. There must be an Exchange Gateway or Connector component that facilitates communication between the Fax Server and Microsoft Exchange.
2. The fax messages must arrive in the subscriber's Inbox with a distinct message class such as IPM.Note.Fax.
3. Clients must be able to send outbound fax messages using this addressing format: [FAX:name@number].
