For gig ports - Hardcode or Auto-negotiate?

Hi

I am on 4.x but:

According to 4.x SRND:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/products_implementation_design_guide_chapter09186a008044751b.html#wp1046515

"The Cisco CallManager servers should be connected to the Ethernet at 100 Mbps full-duplex. If 100 Mbps is not available on smaller deployments, then use 10 Mbps full-duplex. On many of the newer servers, 1000 Mbps full-duplex is now also an option. You can achieve this configuration by forcing the network interface card (NIC) to the required speed and duplex setting and by manually configuring the Ethernet switch port as well."

According to 5.x SRND:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/products_implementation_design_guide_chapter09186a008063743a.html#wp1046515

"For 1000 Mbps, Cisco recommends using Auto/Auto for speed and duplex configuration on both the NIC and the switch port."

It sounds like hardcoding is still recommend for 4.x?? but like to make sure due to the inconsistency with 5.x SRND.

Thx

Re: For gig ports - Hardcode or Auto-negotiate?

I believe the 4.x SRND is referring to connecting a gigabit NIC to a 100Mpbs switch port. If you are connecting a gigabit NIC to a gigabit port, auto/auto is the recommended configuration even in 4.x. We are running 4.x with a gigabit NIC connected to a gigabit port and use auto/auto. This was confirmed as correct by a TAC engineer.

Hope this helps. If so, please rate the post.

Re: For gig ports - Hardcode or Auto-negotiate?

Can u believe it...Cisco just updated their SRND and now gig ports are recommend at auto/auto:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/products_implementation_design_guide_chapter09186a00806e8c0a.html#wp1046515

The best practice is to configure both the server port and the Ethernet switch port manually, with the exception of Gigabit Ethernet ports which should be set to Auto/Auto.
