Hey JEFF - SAN solution with Unity?

The opportunity is for 48,000 voicemail boxes. They specify unified messaging in the RFP. I figure that at 480KB using g.711 coding comes out to 14.0625MB per 30 minutes of VM recording per user.

We have 48,000 subscribers. This comes out to 675GB of disc space (unless my math is off). Wouldn't the ideal design have a SAN like HP's EVA series running as the message store? They have a 1TB flavor of SAN solution that I was thinking of proposing.

Have any of you done this? Jeff, if you are out there, what would be your design recommendation? There may be 2 core sites that will share a GigaMAN link.

Re: Hey JEFF - SAN solution with Unity?

Since this is Unified Messaging, you are in luck. There is no reason why the back end message server or cluster servers could not use a SAN. The Unity UM server itself does not need it. The only obvious caveat you will already be thinking of is proper SAN fabric design to avoid network delays that could jeopardize downstream Unity performance by impeding the Exchange or Domino back end's performance.

SAN extension over MAN might be desired, but remember the native propagation delay of multi-kilometre optical is your minimum delay floor.

The EVA is probably a fine system. Other suitable mid-range systems would include EMC's CLARiiON, HDS's 9500 or IBM's FAStT series. Hope this helps.
