howto get to the FXO card in the IOS

i have a 2611 router running IOS c2600-ik9o3s3-mz.122-15.T2.bin and i just installed a VIC-2FXO in slot 0 as confirmed by:

Slot 0:

C2611 2E Mainboard Port adapter, 2 ports

Port adapter is analyzed

Port adapter insertion time unknown

EEPROM contents at hardware discovery:

Hardware Revision : 2.3

PCB Serial Number : JAD042804VF (2459425926)

Part Number : 73-2840-13

RMA History : 00

RMA Number : 0-0-0-0

Board Revision : C0

Deviation Number : 0-0

EEPROM format version 4

EEPROM contents (hex):

0x00: 04 FF 40 00 92 41 02 03 C1 18 4A 41 44 30 34 32

0x10: 38 30 34 56 46 20 28 32 34 35 39 34 32 35 39 32

0x20: 36 29 82 49 0B 18 0D 04 00 81 00 00 00 00 42 43

0x60: FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF

0x70: FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF

a paper i found on cisco site said to access the port use the following command

router(config)#voice-port slot-number/port

here is what i tried.

exe-router(config)#voice-port ?

<50-50> Voice interface slot #

exe-router(config)#voice-port 50/?

<0-0> Voice interface SubUnit #

exe-router(config)#voice-port 50/0?

/

exe-router(config)#voice-port 50/0/?

<1-4> Voice interface port # within vic

exe-router(config)#voice-port 50/0/1

^

% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

exe-router(config)#

why is an error being detected at 50?

then i typed

exe-router(config)#voice-port 50/0/1.?

<1-31> Voice ds0 channel number

<1-4>

why is that coming up? the article never mentioned anything about that.

any help will be great. btw i have ITS configured on this router and 7960 phones are registring with it. i'm trying to get the router to allow the phones to make outbound calls.

thanks.

It sounds like you have the VIC-2FXO installed in one of the on-board WIC slots on your 2611. This is not a valid hardware configuration. On the 2600 platform, a VIC-2FXO card must be installed on an NM-1V or NM-2V network module which provides the DSP resources to packetize the analog voice signal.

hmmm that would explain it. out of curiosity, where did you find that information out? thanks again.

Re: howto get to the FXO card in the IOS

Well, that's just the nature of the hardware. Any VIC or VWIC needs supporting DSP resources. For example, the VIC-2FXO, VIC-2FXS, VIC-2DID, etc will work in the NM-1V or NM-2V on the 2600, 3600 and 3700 platforms. Those VICs and more will work on 1700-series platform and other platforms where the DSP resources are provided by the optional PVDM modules (they look like memory SIMMs). The VWIC-1MFT-T1 (and the 2 T1 module, and the E1 variant) work with PVDMs or in the WIC slots on the 2600 or 3700 with the AIM-VOICE-30 or AIM-ATM-VOICE-30 DSP modules that fit in the AIM slots on these routers. There are more options that I'm not covering here, but to make a long story short, there are basically no VWICs or VICs that will work without compatible DSP resources.
