Implementing H.323 over an existing WAN infrastructure

Trying to determine the best way to integrate h.323 based enpoints into an existing lan/wan infrastructure. Users want to have video at their existing desktop and be able to connect to the other end of the WAN link. Are there any H.323 systems that will work behind a firewall?

Thank you in advance!

Re: Implementing H.323 over an existing WAN infrastructure

D - Congratulations on pushing h.323 video!! There are several concerns in integrating with existing LAN/WAN's. You should be running switches only in the LAN (no shared media), and the routers need to be smart enough to handle the QoS. There are versions of Cisco's IOS that can proxy the QoS functions because most low end endpoints can't request the QoS for themselves. With regards to a firewall, I think your concern really relies with NAT/PAT and not just the firewalling. Yes, you can run 323 endpoints behind a firewall.

Hope this helps & good luck!!

323 systems themselves are not aware of the existence or absence of firewalls. Firewalls need to be H.323 enabled to accomodate video conferencing. Both the PIX and IOS firewalls from Cisco support such s/w as an option

It would be very simple to configure a Microsoft Net Meeting to do the desired function. Although, should you choose to use the Cisco FXO and FXS VIC cards in your routers you might have some problems with the audio codecs
