I am installing a Unity VM only install without Unified messaging. Is there any way to import the users from an existing AD structure when creating the VM mailboxes? Unified messaging will most likely be purchase later.

Yes, you can import users with VM only in the same way that you can with UM.

well... it's important to note that you can't use the same email box that you get your email with at the desktop if you're going to stay in compliance with the VM only license. If you import users from AD as VM subscribers, by definition you wont be in compliance with the VM only license agreement. You'll need to create seperate mailboxes for VM users that are not access from desktop clients. I know it's awkward but the VM only license agreement does not allow for any desktop access of voice mail messages other than via the seperately licensed VMI web interface.
