Internet Subscribers?

admin_2

We're trying to get Unity to leave messages for our Internet helpdesk in a mail-enabled public folder. Obviously, this means it can't be an exchange integrated user because there is none - but i should be able to setup an Internet subscriber with the email address of the publicfolder (techsupport@letu.edu) right? For some reason it's not working and before i troubleshot further I thought i'd check to ensure I'm not going about it the wrong way... :-)

- Ken

Ken Johnson
Mgr. can you tell me a little more than "it's not working"? Can you also provide the version of Unity you're working with?

If you setup an internet subscriber and have it's SMTP address setup correctly, any messages left for that internet subscriber are simply handed off to exchange to deliver as any other email message would be (i.e. it shows up as an email with an attached WAV file).

so, are you getting the internet subscriber via the auto attendant, leaving a message and it NDRs back to the unaddressed messages DL? Not finding the internet subscriber in the system? Can you leave an email using the exact same SMTP address on the internet subscriber and it gets where it's going?

Ah - sorry - I guess it wasn't too descriptive....

Actually - honestly it could be a exchange config issue i guess - strangely - what's hapening is if I configure the message to point to an external internet address (like ken@elsewhere.com the voicemessage gets delievered to that addr fine.

If, however, I address it to an address assigned to a public folder (techsupport@letu.edu) Unity takes the message - but then it vanishes into the void :-)

I guess it might be hard to see anyway that's unity - but if I send to techsupport@letu.edu from my outlook - or from an anonymous external Internet address it works fine...

Well - I don't think this is realted to the problem - but it may be making it harder to troubleshoot - for some reason we have two of each of the default distribution lists ("Unaddressed Messages", All Subscribers, etc) I have no idea when this happened - and it won't let me delete any of them - one of each list is correctly configured - the other is blank...

Update - actually it seems inconsistent - I got one message that went out to the external net addr - but since then none have (though i continue to be able to send from outlook to them - pretty odd...still none have deleiverd via internet subscriber to a local addr - any ways in which the way internet subscribers are impoemented could be messed up by something on the exchange side in a way that wouldn't affect me sending from outlook?

OK - update - after bothering to check - all these messages (to internet subscribers like kenjohnson@digitaltrouble.com) and even kenjohnson@letu.edu are going to the Unaddressed messages DL and stacking up there - would that be a Unity config prob or an E2k problem do you think? Sorry for so much trouble today :-)

This is an Exchange thing... you can't address messages directly to a public folder by default (if you do this via Outlook it'll fail as well). Here's a post on how to get around it:

http://avforums.isomedia.com/cgi-bin/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=unityent&Number=1357&page=&view=&sb=&vc=1#Post1357

Short story is you create a public DL and add the public folder as a recipient and address the messages to the DL instead... there's other clever solutions but that's the easiest.

Thanks :-) Actually - doing some poking around, it seems like my core problem might be an inability to send email to the contact records created under the "CISCO" OU in Active directory as part of the Internet Subscriber process - I can't even send to them from Outlook - it will resolve them and accept the message - but never go anywhere - even though they clearly have the right addresses in them...so perhaps there's something in that OU that exchange doesn't like - I'll troubleshoot via both your link and trying to figure out why those contacts go nowhere :-)

In my experience, all that needs to be done in exchange 2k is to mail enable the public folder. No distribution list required and it does not need to be unhidden from the GAL. In exchnage system manager>expand folders>expand public folders>right click on your public folder> select all tasks>mail enable

unless I am misunderstanding. I have never had to create a DL to send mail to a public folder(in ex2k). It's been a long time since I have logged on to a 5.5 box(thank god) so perhaps that is what your referencing?.....

yeah... that post was from a while back and was for 5.5... you couldn't just mail enable public folders way back when I was your age!
