Since you're viewing the RAW serial data, you'll see all packets on the wire. Italics indicate outbound data packets, or information Unity sends to the switch. Non-italicized text is inbound information being sent by the phone system to Unity. Lamps are generally the only outbound operation you'll see from Unity.
Sometimes we test SIO functionality by putting a loop-back tester on the serial port or cable and sending a lamp request. When doing a loop-back test you should see the outbound packet in italics, followed by a matching inbound packet.
