IP Phone License Question

We have a client running an an older version of CallManager version 3.3(5)sr2a. They are looking at purchasing some refurb Gig capable phones of model CP-7941G-GE. From documentation I see this phone will run with their current call manager. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/compat/ccmcompmatr.html#wp53948

My question is how will the user license work. Would I need to purchase one for this phone to operate on this version of CallManager and where would I find the part number? Who would I purchase it from? Thanks for any help. Jon

Hi Jon,

This is an excellent question :) The Part # with License would be;

Cisco CP-7941G-GE-CH1 (**CH-1) is the license portion)

For all 3.x and 4.x versions (including CCM 3.3(x)) the CH-1 (Channel)Phone License (paper) was used and is really totally "honor" based. There is no License actually loaded "on-box" so these phones will work;

From this good Q & A doc;

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/products_qanda_item0900aecd805009fc.shtml

So, CUCM Versions up to 5.x have no onboard licensing restrictions. You can add phones without licenses and CCM does not care. Of course, being the honest people we are this would never happen! But it is strictly "honor based".

Don't forget this model has been announced as End of Life

End-of-Sale and End-of-Life Announcement for the Cisco Unified IP Phones 7971G-GE, 7970G, 7961G-GE, and 7941G-GE (Hardware Only)

Hope this helps!

Thanks Rob. This is exactly what I needed. - Jon
