IP Phones reboot

Hi there,

we have a problem with phone resets. without any reasons the phones reloads (not all but 50% of the phones) , we do have the latest phoneload but not the latest CCM service release (3.3(3)). Is it rather a network problem, readjustment of the keepalive timers (default 30 sec) phones to CCM. or rather a problem with the cat switches or CCM service release.

If anyone does have a clue please feel to respond:-)

Some troubleshooting suggestions...

I would isolate first, since 50% of the phones reset, what is the commonality there? Same location, network path, same primary CM ? etc..

Are any Callmanagers experiencing problems? You can check the windows Event Viewer to see if anything is logged that helps isolate. Is the CCM.exe process restarting?

You can also look into the CCM system logs to see the reason for the phone reset. These are located under

c:\program files\cisco\trace\ccm . The default traces that are enabled on CM should suffice.

If too much trace is enabled, that could cause too high a CPU.

Monitor your CPU on the affected CM's to see if CPU peaks during the outages. If so determine what is using CPU during these times.

Cabling is frequently the culprit, especially if you are using powered patch panels, which do not power the phone over the Ethernet pairs.

We had one location where we had to keep going back to reterminate drops which were causing phone resets. The cabling components all met Cat 5 specs, but the original install had been done by a novice installer, who apparently did no testing.
