Hi,
excuse me if my question will seem out-of-subject but I'm relatively new to IP telephony.
Can use the IP softphone to place a call via a router with FXO ports?
my setup will only include the router and the softphone, no call manager or other telephony server.
Thanx

You cannot use IP softphone for this since it is tapi based and needs the callmanager to operate. You can however use Microsoft netmeeting to accomplish the same thing. Netmeeting is h.323 and the routers support h.323 connections.
Hope this helps,

The Cisco SoftPhone has two primary modes of operation. The first mode of operation is reference to as CTI mode. In this mode, the Cisco SoftPhone is used in conjunction with a physical IP phone. The Cisco SoftPhone allows for software based control of the physical phone. The second mode is Virtual Mode. In virtual mode, the Cisco SoftPhone is the phone device itself. In the terms of IP telephone, the Cisco SoftPhone is the media termination point.
In either case ..you need Call Manager for SoftPhone to work. Netmeeting is another Option. Softphone also uses netmeeting for collaboration.
