IP Softphone won't go off-hook

Problem:

IP Softphone won't go off-hook unless associated with a device.

When the softphone is associated with a device, all is well.

When the softphone is not asscociated with a device, I still see lines to attach to, however, the phone won't stay off-hook and therefore I am unable to use it to make calls.

Is it required to associate a softphone with a device?

You might want to double-check you used a CTI port for your softphone configuration; not a CTI route point. I've done this before on accident and it resulted in similar symptoms.
