Layer 1 Deactivated

Dear Sir!

I try to use VIC-2BRI-NT/TE with NM-2V module to make ISDN trunk to my PBX = Alcatel A4400 with such

configuration for BRI port

with straight Cat5 cabling:

interface BRI1/0

shutdown

no ip address

isdn switch-type basic-net3

isdn overlap-receiving

isdn not-end-to-end 64

isdn protocol-emulate network

isdn layer1-emulate network

isdn incoming-voice voice

isdn sending-complete

no isdn outgoing display-ie

isdn static-tei 0

isdn skipsend-idverify

no shutdown

!

then reload the gateway.

But then 'sh isdn status' command show that

Layer 1 Deactivated.

But when I connect to this PBX port BRI-S/T port on other router (for data only, without NM-2V), this command show that

Layer 1 Active

I cannot suppose, why?

Can you tell me how such situation can happen?

Best regards,

Nick

Nick,

The problem is the ISDN protocol-emulate network command.

I'm assuming that you are connecting to an ISDN extension port on the Alcatel, which will be expecting to see an ISDN phone type device connected, however you've configured the port to emulate network, so you now have both ends of the circuit trying to be master.

When you connect it as a data device it will only be an S interface and so will work with the Alcatel.

Hi Nick,

if you need to be Layer 1 Master, please try to

use a crossovercable.

Nethertheless I would recommend that the router is Layer 1 Slave in any case (at least for those routers which don't have a TDM backplane, e.g. CISCO 3640)

Regards,

Andreas
