Cisco guide states 'Do not add the application mgcpapp command to dial peers that support PRI backhaul.'
Well, it appears to be working OK even with 'application mgcpapp' under backhaul dial-peer.
Anyone knows what's the reason behind the restriction?

With new IOS, app mgcpapp is deprecated and you should be using service mgcpapp

I don't think Cisco would restrict this just because 'application mgcp' is not needed anymore. There must be something more to it.

With the new IOS, service mgcpapp is not needed for t1 pri backhaul. The following command underneath the D channel should take care of everything: isdn bind-l3 ccm-manager
The "service mgcpapp" command is however still needed for fxs/fxo ports -- thus dial-peers need to be configured to refer to these ports and reference the "service mgcpapp" command.
