Migration from Unity 2.4 to 3.0

In order to leverage our investment in IP technology to its fullest, it is necessary to upgrade the phone system to the latest release of the Cisco call manager and Unity software. Version 3.0 of Unity voice messaging supports exchange 2000. Our current version of Unity does not exchange 2000. We are not however migrated to Exchange 2000. I wonder if this will have any negative/positive impact in our plan to upgrade to unity 3.x from 2.x. What is the best strategy based on experience, should the upgrades remain mutually exclusive, or should they be rolled into a total seamless project. Also, what other questions need to be address regarding the upgrade, i.e. current hardware compatibility etc. etc. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Unless you have a pressing reason to move to 3.X I would suggest staying at 2.X for the time being. You might look at 2.4.6.161. Not that there is anything wrong with 3.X but the migration is fairly long and complex and 3.X mostly adds scalability, networking features and Exchange 2000 support.

If you do chose to migrate to 3.X you will want to make sure your server is on the HCL since there is no grandfathering of XYZ brand servers from 2.X to 3.X. You can get the list of supported servers here:

Unity 3.X can integrate with Exchange 5.5 just fine. One of the nice things about Unity 3.X is that you can (and should if possible) run Exchange off box. If you chose to upgrade to Exchange 2000 or run mix mode you will simply need to upgrade the Unity Configuration. These are the notes for doing the Unity 3.X upgrade from 5.5 to 2000:
