Moving mailboxes to new server

admin_2

In the process of upgrading our Exchange server hardware to a new box - we're having to move all mail users (and unity subscribers) from mail server "A" to temprary mail server "B" - they'll be there for about a month while we prep the new server and then move to the new server (which will be called "A").

We're going to use the "move mailbox" option in AD to do this on the user side - but on the Unity side - what needs to be done to ensure continued voicemail support? The first "A" server will be taken offline after the move to "B" so it's hard drives can be wiped and reused in the new hardware.

Specs: Unity 3.1.3
Exchange 2000 SP2, running off-box from Unity

Thanks!

- Ken

Ken Johnson
Mgr. With Exchange 2000 there's nothing you need to do on the Unity side. You can move the mailboxes between servers while Unity is up and running no sweat. The first time users call in to check messages they may experience a coupld extra seconds of delay since Unity will attempt to log into their mailbox where we "think" it is and then have to back up and ask AD where this mailbox is now and take another run at it.

You only need to worry when moving users around Exchange 5.5 boxes... if you're on 2K you're golden.

OK - we finished moving all the mailboxes to the new server - and things seemed to work fine while both were up. But now that we've removed the old exchange server - UNity is running at 100% and no messages are getting delivered. Calling into UNity it reports the "mail server is not available"

So it seems like it was referencing the old server which was redirecting it to the new servver - how can we check what unity thinks the current exchange server is?

ah... you didn't mention that you were moving users off the Exchange server that Unity was connected to as it's bridghead and then retiring it... details, details. Here's the instructions for changing which Exchange 2000 server we're connected to - yeah, we're working on properly automating this but currently it has to be done by hand:

==========================
"How to rehome Unity from one Exchange 2000 server to another"

Stop Unity.

In AD Users and Computers, move user mailboxes from OldE2KSvr to NewE2KSvr.

Open DohPropTest and force a full resynch of the AD monitor and the GC monitor.

Stop the AD Monitor and GC Monitor via the Services applet.

Delete the following registry setting:
HKEY_USERS > .Default > Software > Microsoft > Windows NT > Current Version > Windows Messaging Subsystem > Profiles > Unity System Profile

Change the following registry settings to reflect the new server name. Be aware that some of these registry settings contain more than one reference to the previous Exchange server!

++ HKLM > Software > Active Voice > Doh > 1.0 > Mail Server Name

++ HKLM > Software > Active Voice > MalEx > 1.0 > ServerName

++ HKLM > Software > Active Voice > Directory Connectors > DirSynchAD > 1.0 > Directory > DefaultMailboxStore

++ HKLM > Software > Active Voice > Directory Connectors > DirSynchAD > 1.0 > Domains > {your domain name} > Mailusers > MailboxStore

**NOTE** In more recent versions of Unity, the above registry setting is in GUID format. If your registry setting is a GUID, the change needs to be made in
++ DohPropTest > AD Monitor > {your domain name} > Mailbox_Store and Default_Mailbox_Store.

Start the GC monitor and AD monitor

Restart Unity

Ok thanks :-)

Well, that fixed Unity - in terms of message delivery and retrieval - got about 6 messages instantaneously in my inbox...

However, since then (about 4 hours)the CPU on the Unity server has been spiked out with the following processes spiked out:

AvDSGlobalCatal
AvDSAD.exe
AvCsMgr.exe
AvGaenSvr.exe

Is this normal and/or will it go away? Or does it indicate a problem?

Normally the CPU usage on this Unity is near-nil...

there have been problems with that GAEN service on and off... I generally don't trust it. Try killing that service and disabling it.

OK THanks - doing that stopped the 100% cpu util,

But now the rest of the services are conspiring to go up to 80/90% for a few seconds - then down to zero for a few - the task manager looks like a bunch of hills :-) Should I just see if without GAEN if it will settle down over time - or should that have cleared it up?

P.S. - what does that service do I just killed? :-)

it should settle down over time, it's getting info from the global catalog about objects in the directory it cares about.

The GAEN service (general audio error notification) is the guy that monitors the event log for events we've setup to trigger notifications on. There's the GAEN administration interface where you can setup which events to trigger on and who to notify and how... it's a cool idea but that service has had its share of issues spiking the CPU (the admin group is revamping it for 4.0).

short story is it's not a necessary service for the normal functioning of Unity.

Gotcha - ok! I really appreciate it - I'll let Unity settle down on it's own.

THanks so much for the help today!!

OK - was just checking on the server and I'm not sure how long it should take to settle down - but she's still spazzing up and down to 99% and back to zero on the CPU...is that still okay - or is that a little long? Oly 150 subscribers currently - in an AD tree of about 3000 total users.

The only noticeable error I can see in the event log is a recurring instance about every 20-30 minutes of

AvCsServices_MC
Gateway FindCsComponents failed (LETNET\Unity_LEAH, 0x80070005) (caller is denied access)

Also - there are series of messages
"AvCiscoTspdevice 18 (the number varies) Reconnected to Call Manager 10.90.10.10"
"AvCiscoTsp device 1 (number varies) G729a capable"
"AvCiscoTspdevice 18 (the number varies) Disconnected from Call Manager 10.90.10.10"

these repeat more frequently - every few minutes

As before - UNity herself appears to be functioning fine other than the CPU service usage - and perhaps I've just gotten impatient again - if so my apologies :-/

Hm - checked today and the CPU is still spiking up and down
AvCsServices_MC
Gateway FindCsComponents failed (LETNET\Unity_LEAH, 0x80070005) (caller is denied access)
is stil the eventlog's mainstay every few minutes - is there anything short of calling TAC that's likely to help me troubleshoot this one - or is it too complicated to fit into any known patterns? :-)

Thanks!

That DOH error translates to:

LDAP_INSUFFICIENT_RIGHTS ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED

sounds like a rights issue is still at play somewhere...

Oh - ok. That's the LDAP query to the GC server of the domain? Or the Exchange server?

I'm not sure... if you bundle up the entire application event log and send it my way I'll pass it on to the DOH-boys and see what they have to say.
