Non cisco IP Phone support

Hi,

we have a service provider customr who has brought 1000 polycom phones and want to integrate it with call manager.

We are trying to integrate a polycom ip 500h model ip phone with call manager 3.1.3a. we configured the polycom phone as a H.323 client. We find that the polycom ip phone is not getting registred with the call manager. On troubleshooting we created a <mac>.cfg in the tftppath directory. The polycom ip phone got identifed by its ip address in the call manager, but the status was still unknown.

Any help with info on integrating polycom phones with call manager is highly aprreciated.

I've never installed them before, but I understood the Polycom phones were, as far as call manager is concerened, 79XX phones and so should auto register in the same way Cisco phones do. So by configuring them up as H.323 clients you are probably stopping call manager from registering them because it sees the IP address and thinks it already has the device.

Try just plugging a phone in without configuring an H.323 client.

Hi,

There are two models of ip phones 1) IP 500H and

2)IP500CS. IP 500H supports only h.323 and that is the model customer has. The IP 500CS supports skinny. May be that can get auto registered, but not IP 500H.

You need to change the template to a 7960 in CCM. For some reason that will make it register. You will still only be able to actually use the top two configurable lines of course.

Hi ,

I am not able to change the phone template for any ohone configured as H323 client.

You have to delete the H323 device, and re-add the phone as a 7960

Hi,

The polycom phone supports only H323 protocol. In case if we add it as a 7960 will it it work as 7960 works on skinny. More over when we did a tftp trace we find that the polycom phone looks for a .cfg file where as call manager creates only a .cnf file in the tftppath directory.

Are you sure it only runs H323? THey did release some phones that use skinny. If it is H323, then you just need to define it as a H323 client.

Hi,

There are two models of IP phones IP500 H and IP500 CS. The H models supports only h323 where as the CS model supports skinny. Customer has IP500 H alone which needs to be integrated with call manager.

Vel,

because you are using the H.323 version of the Polycom phones, they will not register with call manager and CM will not know their status. Call manager doesn't care about the status of H.323 devices, as long as it knows how to send them a call.

Also you may have problems with addressing, because call manager needs to know the IP address of the end point, all phones will need to be registered on the DNS server or statically configured. Even if you use DNS you may still find that it fails.

I would suggest you go back to the customer and get them to exchange the handsets for the SCCP version, otherwise you may find this takes longer to get working than makes practical sense.
