physical disk activity- queue length exceeds 1

Does anyone know what the queue length is specifically? And what makes it jump up to 8 or 9 briefly? Is this normal? How can I find what process, or processes are causing it? I get alarms on my monitoring station for "physical disk busy." It always turns out to be the queue length exceded 1. Any info would be appreciated.
