I was wanting to take a subscriber out of my cluster and make it a test box. Then I was going to upgrade it to 3.3x version from 3.2x. I really didnt want to have to do a total rebuild but I did anyways and it really was no big deal...
If you are using the Compaq servers for your CCM Servers here's something you could try next time.
On the Publiosher, break the RAID mirror set by removing the Drive in bay 1. Remove both drives in the subscriber/test server. Place the drive you pulled from the Publisher in bay 0 on the subscriber/test server and boot the server. You'll now have a duplicate server that you can upgrade and test without affecting your production server. I would place the test server on an isolated network before powering it up.
