QOS on Layer 3 interface

Folks,

We have a 6500 with a Sup 720. We are running Native IOS. We are using autoqos on the access ports. I am not sure what i should do at the Layer 3 (Vlan interface). The phones and the callmanager servers are in 2 different vlans, and i want to make sure that the traffic is prioratized when it crosses the layer 3 boundary.

Thanks

Re: QOS on Layer 3 interface

You don't need to do any QoS at layer 3 with 6500 switches. The Sup engines does Layer 3 switching in hardware using PFC at wire-speed and hence the interaction with MSFC (vlan interface) is minimal.

The classification and prioritization happens at the port level. So either port based or vlan based QoS should be good and Auto QoS would do the same.

Check this link for more info on 6500 Layer 3 switching.

Anup,

Awesome answers, does the same principal apply to catalyst 4500 series switches as well.

Thanks

Re: QOS on Layer 3 interface

Yes, 4500 also does Layer 3 switching in hardware.
