Does anyone know if its possible to transcode between G723 and G729? For example if I have a G723 remote phone (old VIP-30) that needs to call a G729 phone (7960) on the central site (equipped with a VG200 hardware transcoder), will the call succeed?
Will the hardware transcoder transcode the G723 call into G711 so that both phones support the call?
We don't normally transcode between two low bit-rate codecs as this has an adverse effect on the voice quality. What will happen in this scenario is as you describe - the G.723 call will hit the transcoder at the central site and be converted into G.711 for delivery to the 7960.
