That means you should backup the entire hard drive, NOT just the commserver folder. This includes the registry, SQL databases and the Exchange mailstore/directory (AD). You'll need to use a backup package that has SQL and Exchange aware plug ins (i.e. Veritas).
typically you'd do a full backup of the entire HD and then do "delta" backups from that point forward. If you just backup the commserver directory and attempt to restore it somewhere Unity will never come back up on that box.
