Not sure what you mean by DiRT "didn't offer to backup messaes" - you have to select it on the form there, it's not on by default - the option has been in for many versions now and it's been used by lots of folks so I know it's there and works - please explain to me exactly what you mean here. The option was gray? You couldn't select the option (i.e. it gave you an error message when you tried)? Need much more detail here...
If you backed up the .pdb file you can't use ExMerge for that - it only slurps in and out .pst files. You'll have to use the restore mechansim you used to back up the message database.
