Can anyone give me a rough idea on the real life scalability of Unity 2.4.6 with unified messaging vs voice mail only. I have heard that about 1000 users is the max you would want...

Thanks for any advice

Unity 2.4.6 can 'real life' scale to 2500 users in a unified messaging environment. Above 2500 users is the GAL will work but spell by names can take 30 seconds or longer beyond that. That is why we only support 2500 objects in the GAL.
Unity 3.0(1) will scale to somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 users.

Thanks for the information. If possible can you tell me what will be behind Unity 3.0 to make name lookup more scaliable and quicker?

Right now we use the Exchange 5.5 LDAP database as our database. This is why we need Exchange 5.5 on box. While this works great for 2500 users or less, the database queries are not nearly fast enough to support a Cisco size company.
With 3.0 we move our database to SQL and cache user information from other Unity servers in this database. Now queries with 10s of thousands of users can be done very quickly.
Jeff talks more about this with his Networking Overview Doc and a previous post on this forum.
