Separating CCM/Unity from Phones

I know it makes sense from a security perspective to separate your CCM and Unity servers from the phones with a firewall, but does it make sense functionally?

What are the issues? Pros/Cons?

You will need to open a lot of ports depending on which side of firewall your servers and phones are.
