Silence suppresion in Callmanager

Can someone explain what silence suppresion is used for in callmanager. what is the benefit of turing on or off.

As hopefully your searches turned up, Silence suppression mechanisms (VAD) , voice activity detection, are a means to conserve bandwidth. With this on, sound quaility may reduce but no audio is sent during periods of silence which reduces bandwidth utilization

Comfort noise is then used to create backround noise when you are using VAD so there is not complete silence .
