MWI is broke for all phones after a reinstall of Unity on 3.1(2) UM system. TSP is 6.2(b). Restored Unity using DIRT. MWI can be set using the status monitor tool on Unity. In SA Unity does not reflect the correct status of MWI and actually never changes. It appears to be an issue between Exchange and Unity. Exchange is not installed on the Unity server. Exchange version is 2000. TAC is currently working on this but thought I'd run it by the forum in case somebody has run into a similiar problem.
I think your assumption of a communication problem b/w Unity and Exchange is correct.
It's possible (for a couple of reasons) that Unity isn't getting message notifications from Exchange. Unity needs these messages notifications to determine if a message has been read, or a new message has arrived. That might be the first thing to check. The ExchangeMonitor trace "MAPI Notifications" will show when these notifications arrive, if they are arriving. The trace entry won't show for which user the noitification was for (but, in 3.1.5, it does). However, if you see some entries like..
TABLE_ROW_MODIFIED (ADDED or DELETED)
after leaving a new message for a subscriber, then you can assume that Unity is getting Exchange notifications. If these traces entries do not show up, determining what's going on is a multi-step process with which TAC can assist.
A couple of days ago, Unity stopped working after a reboot. The event viewer had no errors and the services seemed to be running. But UNITY was not really running. There was no voicemail, no Saweb, nothing. After consulting with TAC, we ending up restoring with DIRT using a previous backup of the database. When the system came back it still did not work. The TAC engineer eventually found out that the following registry settings was set to "NO". He restored the correct settings but probably forgot to restore Component 21. My question is, how did these settings get set to "NO"? I looked at some backups from previous weeks and they were also set to "NO" but the system continued to work in the meantime. Is there another place to set these?

The short answer is that you don't.... That isn't entirely true while at
the same time it kind of is, but for the most part you don't configure
the softkeys. You enable or disable them via TCL. Here is the long
