If i choose to deploy my end points using TAPS, how do i insure that each extension receives the ext number it had in prior TDM deployment?

With TAPS, you add all the handsets to the system using dummy MAC addresses... You would then deploy the handsets to desks.
Then from each phone you would dial into TAPS, enter the ext number you want to apply to the phone, and it will be set to the MAC of the phone you dial from.
So as you walk up to a desk, you (or whoever is doing this fun little task) need to know what ext was on it before (or still is on it) so you can apply the ext number to the Cisco handset.

ok,
so within CMadmin i add a number of phones to the database to provide TAPS with a handle,no extention number is entered in the database at this point.
when someone dials the TAPS pilot number and goes thru the registration process the true mac address and the "first time entered" extension number of that phone is entered in the database ?
sounds uncommonly simple.

Nearly - you enter the full handset configuration (including extension numbers, CSS and everything) as normal, except you use dummy MAC addresses.
TAPS just enters the MAC you call from into the profile in the CM database. It is quite a simple idea...
You likely wouldn't use CCMAdmin to enter all the phone info - it's too slow/boring.
Use BAT to enter the details, it can generate the dummy MACs for you as well...

Hi,
You just have to add the phones using dummy information using BAT. Once they are added in Callmanager, dial the number for TAPS and tell your users to dial the extension they want to be assigned to the phone. Once they punch in that extension, TAPS will give those phones the extensions that you want them to have.

Important Safety Tip for TAPS!
TAPS does not work if there is more than one phone with the same DN (shared line appearances). I do a lot of deployments with assistants having the managers' extensions on their sidecars and TAPS is not usable for this type of deployment.
