unity 3.15 with Exchange 2k, Problem when DNS/AD Go Down

We are a unity 3.15 shop using exchange 2k as our message store. Recently when we bring down our primary active directory server which is also our primary DNS server (we do have a secondary DNS server for both services) it affects unity in a big way. Unity gets messages that the mailbox store cannot be reached, ports start unregistering, or the system does not answer calls. We looked in unity and the secondary DNS is populated, as also it is in exchange. Here are a couple of the types of errors unity is throwing out when this happens:

(1)Attempts to deliver UMR messages have failed due to Unity configuration or connectivity issues with the primary message server.

AvUMRSyncSvr will suspend message delivery for 300 seconds, after which message delivery will be attempted again.

(2) Last Category An attempt to access Exchange Private Store has failed: 80040111. The MAPI subsystem return the following error: The information store could not be opened.

(3) 17052 :

This SQL Server has been optimized for 8 concurrent queries. This limit has been exceeded by 1 queries and performance may be adversely affected.

(4) Cisco Unity-CM TSP device 13 (Unity port 10): Disconnected from CallManager 10.4.0.11. If there are many of these messages in sequence from the same device 13, this port may not be functioning anymore. Check to see that it is answering calls, and the server may need to be restarted to activate the port again. %4

As soon as we get the primary AD /DNS server back up and running, all problems and error messages go away...

Any help on this subject would be GREATLY appreciated

Yeah you are going to see issues like this Unity until 4.0(4) is released which is going to be around June.

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/bugtool/onebug.pl?bugid=CSCdy70554

The good news is that all of the issues that we are aware of have already been addressed so they will make the 4.0(4) release for sure but it still is a few months out.

Hope this helps...

Re: unity 3.15 with Exchange 2k, Problem when DNS/AD Go Down

hmm.. so nothing I can do in meantime in the event we know we will take down our AD/DNS server for maint to keep things smooth with unity? (or in the unlikely but possible event the primary AD Server crashes and is down for a while...) Hope that should not happen with the way unity currently acts when we have to take ad/dns down...

Re: unity 3.15 with Exchange 2k, Problem when DNS/AD Go Down

The biggest problem is when the GC that Unity has set in the MAPI profile goes offline. MAPI doesn't allow us to get a new one while AvCsMrg is running. In 4.0(4) it will with the aid of a hotfix from Microsoft that folks will have to install. If it were to go down before you get to 4.0(4) + hotfix you would have to stop and start Unity for MAPI to allow us to select a new one.

If you want see the GC MAPI is using you can search the registry for Unity System Profile and then look at the key below that starts with ‘dca’.

Thanks,

Keith
