Unity 4.0(2) + voice quality issues w/ internal XCODE?

I have a customer running two remote sites off of a centralized Unity VM 4.0(2) server and a CM 3.3(2) SPc cluster. Regions are configured so that the remote sites communicate at G.711 internally and G.729 over the WAN. Unity is configured for G.711 prompts. We use a VG200 DSP farm for transcoding and conferencing.

We have been experiencing intermittent voice quality issues when customers dial in via remote gateways (1760V + MGCP ISDN PRI). The customer hits the Unity AA and will lose large amounts of the message. We hear "Welcome to <3 secs of silence> for Accounting press 2 << more secs of silence>>" We are also experiencing garbled voice mail user greetings.

The WAN is frame relay w/ 512k of pipe and 512k of CIR. QoS and traffic shaping appear to be functioning properly. We updated to the 7.0(3) TSP thinking this was the jitter related bug in 7.0(2), but the new TSP appears to have made the voice quality issue worse.

There is a bug in 4.0(2) that details voice quality issues in Unity when XCODE between GSM and G729 <CSCec51110>. Is anyone else having issues between G.729 and G.711? Is there a way I can force Unity to only do G.711 and force it to use the VG200 for XCODE? Thanks in advance.

Re: Unity 4.0(2) + voice quality issues w/ internal XCODE?

You can force Unity to only accept G.711 calls. You have to edit the registry to keep the TSP from advertising G729 capabilities:

HKLM \ Software \ ActiveVoice \ AvSkinny \ G729

The key is called "Enabled" and you set it to 1 to enable it and 0 to disable 729a advertising.

oops... broke the key with a line break there...

the key is "G729 Enabled" in the \AvSkinny branch.
