Upgrading CM 4.1.3

Hello all.

I've been tasked to find out how easy/difficult it would be to upgrade CM from 4.1.3 up to at least 4.2 and possibly 5. I figured this is as good a place as any to ask that question. I'm particularly interested in finding out approx. how long it takes, any roadblocks encountered and if problems arise, if it can be rolled back. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Hi Sean,

Someone has given you quite the arduous task :) These are two vasly different upgrade paths to be sure. The 4.1.3 to 4.2.3 upgrade is at least a Windows to Windows upgrade and is going to be simpler and quicker undoubtedly! The 4.1.3 to 5.x upgrade is from Windows to Linux and involves many steps including the use of DMA (Data Migration Assistant), new Licenses for Nodes and DLU's (Device License Units) for phones.

The approximate times are listed in the attached docs. Obviously the upgrade to 5.x is very involved and I personally would be hard pressed to even try it without a proper Lab setup to test the upgrade process. Anytime you do a CCM upgrade it is imperative that you remove a drive and put it away somewhere safe in case you need to rollback :)

Have a close look at this excellent doc;

Just my two cents, hope it helps!

hi Sean,

good to hear someone is doing the same job. I have been working on upgrading our CM as well, from 4.0(2a) to 5.1(2b). if you wanna upgrade to 5.x, it's gonna be complicated process, as least for me. because I am implementing a whole new dial plan design to implement a new numbering plan and media resource deisgn. because too much change settings, plus physical server change as well, I don't use DMA. I am building 5.1(2b) from scratch. it's hard to say the time it takes, it depends what path you take and some specific requirements, and number of gateways you need to upgrade, etc, but I don't mind helping if I know how, since I came along the way and almost done it:)
