Can I change the userID of people w/out deleting the UserID and recreating it for the new name? This causes issues because it will loose synch with the voicemail which I've been told needs to be deleted and recreated also. This causes issues with loosing saved messages.
If you go into AD and update the First Name, Last name properties, this does not affect Unity. You should be able to rename the NT ID simply and it will replicate to Unity. Try it with a test user and see what the outcome is. Remember to wait for the AD replication to take place if you have a large domain.
The basic SID of the AD user is not changing. You are simply changing a few LDAP properties or updating them. IF did delete the name and recreate it with the same properties, it will break the Unity profile, even though you used the same ID, etc.
