Using an R2 FXO-E1 mux as a PSTN gateway

I would like to use a multiplexer in front of a 26xx/36xx in order to interface to several PSTN FXO analog lines over a E1 with R2 signaling. The manufacturer of the multiplexer is very positive that their device will only work with AS5300, and that R2 will not work properly on the 26xx/36xx when connected to the mux. Anybody experiencing similar problems? Do I have to conclude that the multiplexer's R2 software is defective, or maybe the R2 settings should be (dramatically) changed on the two devices in order to make the application work?

The manufacturer probably only tested it with an AS5300 and will only support such a configuration. It might be worth testing with a 26xx/36xx but you may be treading unsupported territory.
