vic2-2fxo port no dialtone

Dear all, I just bought a PVDM2-16 for my 2811 ISR which came without any DSPs. I plug it into the PVDM0 slot and could view it via "show diag" CLI command. I could see the PVDM0 LED at the rear of the box is steady green.

PVDM Slot 0:

Next, I configured the pots dial-peer (with voice-ports) but the analog phone connected to the FXS port does not have dialtone. Tried changing phones, ports, etc but still no dialtone. Next, I connected the ISR to Callmanager 4.1(3) via MGCP and converted the pots dial-peer to MGCPAPP. I can call the FXS phone but one-way audio. IP phone can hear voice from FXS phone but on the analog phone total silence. I checked the RTP stream on CLI and it showed that the ISR is receiving (although lesser) and sending RTP packets. My ISR IOS is c2800nm-ipvoice_ivs-mz.124-5b.bin. Any help is appreciated.

Hi David,

Glad I could help!

DSPs can be hairy, tricky things sometimes.

Re: vic2-2fxo port no dialtone

Couple of things:

Depending on your voice port configuration and dial peers, when you had not configured MGCP there may have been some mismatching. (Notably using a station ID on the voice port and a wildcard outgoing voip dial peer).

Can you ping the gateway's MGCP address from the IP phone's default gateway?

If you haven't already used the mgcp bind command, use that and see if it helps. Check for access lists and possible firewalls in the path.

Otherwise, you may have a bad port, card, or DSP (less likely from the description).

Re: vic2-2fxo port no dialtone

Thanks Nick for responding. Fyi, the FXS phone registered via MGCP does not have dialtone too although I could originate/terminate calls to it. I could make calls although there wasn't any dialtone by dialling the IP Phone and one-way audio resulted as described earlier.

Checked the couple of things you suggested:

1)no config on station-id or any wildcard outgoing voip outgoing dial-peer;

2)No problem pinging the MGCP ip add from IP Phone or the IP Phone's gateway;

3) Already configured the mgcp bind for media and control.

I have tested different FXS cards too. I am suspecting PVDM2 is at fault although I do not see any errors. Any troubleshooting guides for PVDMs or the C2811 motherboard? Thanks!

Re: vic2-2fxo port no dialtone

If it is just dialtone there may be a voltage problem between the card and the router not detecting off hook. It's hard to say.

I would try changing the wiring and the phone as well.

The PVDMs are very general purpose and generally if audio works in one way, it works in another. One-way audio generally will not be a PVDM problem.

You can always try switching things to another router if possible to try and simplify the problem.

Re: vic2-2fxo port no dialtone

I think the router is detecting off-hook as I can lift the handset and call the ip phone on CCM. Somehow the router is unable to send audio or dialtone to tdm based endpoints.

I slotted a vwic-1mft-e1 and got it registered to ccm via mgcp to connect to E1-ISDN. Made a PSTN call and similar one-way audio happens. Party on the remote PSTN does not hear audio from IP phone but the IP phone does get audio from PSTN user. Strange... Is there a tdm bus on the 2811 motherboard which may be faulty or is there a need to update the motherboard firmware/software?

Re: vic2-2fxo port no dialtone

That's odd - either some information is missing or this could be a DSP problem.

You can check some of the things in 'show call active voice brief' to see if they show any warning signs.

Re: vic2-2fxo port no dialtone

Thanks for the doc. From the "show call active brief" command, I have very strong reason to believe that the PVDM2 is faulty. See output below:

I have left the call between the analog phone and ip phone for the past 3 hours. The tx and rx counters has been steadily increasing for both ends. I am trying to get a replacement for the PVDM to confirm this finding. Thanks Nick.

Managed to source for another PVDM and the problem is solved! Thanks Nick!
