What happens to voice mail messages that can't be delivered when the SMTP smart host is down?

I am using Ciscon Unity Connection 8.5.1.  I have a SMTP smart host configured and  several voice mail users configured to relay any incoming voice mail messages to their email address.  This works great and people love it.  My only issue is that I don't know what happens when the SMTP smart host is down.  Does anybody know what happens to the voice mail messages when the SMTP smart host is down?

FYI - Since I'm not using Exchange, I can't do unified messaging so I have the message actions configured to only relay messages.

Hello osoares,

 

The message would go to smtp bad mail directory /var/opt/cisco/connection/smtp/default/badmail.

You can confirm this by going to Cisco Unity Connection Administration page> Tools> Task management> Monitor Bad mail folders.
