Hi,

Can anyone just briefly tell me the difference between these cards?

- Route Switch Module (RSM)

- Multilayer Switch Module (MSM)

- Route Switch Feature Card (RSFC)

- Multylayer Switch Feature Card (MSFC)

A Cat4006 Sup Engine III card belongs to which of the above?

An RSM is a line card that takes up one module in a 5000/5500 chassis.

An MSM is a line card that takes up one module in a 6000 chassis.

An RSFC is a daughterboard designed to be added onto the supervisor engine of a 5500 chassis.

An MSFC is a daughterboard designed to be added onto the supervisor engine of a 6500 chassis.

To be brief, all of the cards are routing modules designed to add layer-3 (routing) capability to existing Catalyst switches. The most advanced, in terms of performance & functionality, of the cards, is the MSFC for the 6500 chassis. You cannot mix these cards with different hardware platforms. All of these cards run Cisco's IOS.

I believe the Supervisor III Engine for the 4006 box is capable of housing a daughterboard MSFC on it (like that of a 6500).. but I would research it just to make sure. Hope this helps..

Not neccessarily. Line card could be any card which goes into a slot(Ethernet, gigabit ethernet, etc)

MSFC(1) for SE1 or SE1A

An DFC is a daughterboard designed to be added onto 65xx or 68xx line modules of a 6500 chassis.

One per line module, more than one per chassis

Need a SE2 and MSFC2 and CEF

SE-III is designed for the Catalyst 4006

Both SE’s 3 and 4 works with Layer 2 and 3 like 6500 SE with MSFC no additional HW required

SE-IV is the cheaper (1000$ less than SE-III) successor of SE-III

For 4006, and 45xx

Both SE’s 3 and 4 works with Layer 2 and 3 like 6500 SE with MSFC no additional HW required
