This is the first time that I have seen such error on our swithces. I have checked on Cisco's website and found out that the probable cause of this error is either spanning tree loops, defective module, or defective supervisor engine. I tried to disable the concerned ports to isolate the spanning tree loops but has not cleared the errors. What I have observed on the error message is that the affected ports are ports 1 and 2 of the four line modules installed on the switch. The cause could be the supervisor engine but I could not isolate it for now since the equipment is currently used on the production network. Maybe I could do it later.

Does anyone of you experienced such problem before? I appreciate much of your inputs on this matter.

thanks,

There have been a lot of questions, previously posted. You might want to check out those by giving a search with keyword "astro"

It could be a problem with your supervisor. Open a tac case and try to rma it.

Thanks for your help!

We had opened a case on tac for this problem and Cisco recommended a replacement on the supervisor engine. Last night, we tried to install a new supervisor but the problem was not resolved. So what we did was we isolated the problem. We removed one by one the line card modules to check if maybe one of it was causing the problem. And finally, we found out that the culprit was on module 2 port 12. One of our user connected a switch-hub on this port with its uplink port patched to its own access port creating a loop. When I removed the patch, the error message was gone.

I was confused why was it that the error messages were pointing on the first two ports of every line card module installed when in fact, the port that was causing the problem was on port 2/12. Maybe there must be some other functions that these ports have that Cisco had assigned to them.

Anyway, I'm so glad that the problem was resolved. Thanks for everyone's input.

This is a well known problem with the Cat 4X00 series . We have replaced countless Sup II cards with this problem and has become a issue with the account we support . If you plan on replacing get the new card first because in many cases if you reboot the switch it will not come back , in many cases we are seeing failed SRAM when going thru the POST . Basically in the messages you are seeing like Astro 3/2 means the Sup has stopped talking to Slot 3 the 2nd group of 8 ports ( 8-15) etc....
