12.3 Flash Requirements

I've checked for a 12.3 sw image for 3640 and identified that it requires 32 M of flash (through IOS Upgrade Planner), but size of the file is about 20 M. What's the reason for that difference of nearly 12 M?

Re: 12.3 Flash Requirements

The IOS you download is in compressed format. When it is in the RAM it will be uncompressed, hence the additional RAM.

Re: 12.3 Flash Requirements

Flash or memory chips are made in the following sizes (16, 32, 64). So the next size available is 32 M after 16 M. Since size of image is 20 M, you have to use a min of 32M to store the file.

Re: 12.3 Flash Requirements

But aren't there PCMCIA flash cards available in 20 M size?

Re: 12.3 Flash Requirements

Yes, there is a 20 M PCMCIA card. You could use that. But you wont be able to store any more files on it. (Like an extra IOS file if you need, save configs on to flash etc).
