Hi for pinging to loopback adaptor(127.0.0.1) on a workstation you do not have to have NIC card present in your workstation.
Only thing is you TCP/IP protocol stack should be installed, configured and working.

Loopback address is a special IP number ( usually 127.0.0.1) from the 127.0.0.0 network, that is designated for the software loopback interface of a machine. The loopback interface has no hardware associated with it, and it is not physically connected to a network.
The loopback interface allows you to test TCP/IP stack without worrying about broken or corrupted drivers or hardware.
hope that helps.
