2 1720 routers between 2 buildings

We're new to the Cisco IOS and we need help in troubleshooting this one, we got 2 1720's on each building, we're on a class c network that we divided in half, we assigned the other half starting with router2, they talk to each other, bldng2 browses the web, but can't browse our lan (where router1 is)

we have a dhcp server with wins setup in bldng1, the pc that we setup in bldng2 doesn't log into the network as well, it's got a link though, tcp-ip configured correctly, any help would be great, thanks

I'm struggling to understand what you are getting at here. Are the Pc's in building 2 getting DHCP assigned IP addresses? If not, is the DHCP server on the same subnet as the router in building 2? If it isn't you need to do something because by default the router will not forward broadcast - such as DHCP broadcasts. To enable this you need to go to config mode and then enter the interface which receives the DHCP broadcasts (typically interface ethernet 0) then enter this command:

Router(config-if)#ip helper-address 10.1.1.1

Where 10.1.1.1 is the IP address of the DHCP server. You need to find out the IP address of the DHCP server and ensure you can ping it from the router before you enter the command.

The command should then send all DHCP broadcasts to the DHCP server so all PC's get the necessary IP info to be able to surf the web, etc.

If this is not what you wanted to know, apologies!

Re: 2 1720 routers between 2 buildings

Hi Darren, thanks for the reply, actually we don't have dhcp on bldng2, it's on 1, we do have a static address on the pc in bldng2, with wins on it as well,

what we did was reconfigure our firewall and we were able to ping addresses but not names, so we ended up entering hostnames on the hosts.sam tables, that worked as far as pinging, but it doesn't wanna logon to the pdc, and browse the lan.

i have the same thing set up, how have you set up your ethernet interfaces. Also how have you subnetted the sites?

Re: 2 1720 routers between 2 buildings

We separated the network into 2 (xxx.xxx.xxx.1 up to xxx.xxx.xxx.127) then starting from 129, that's the other router in bldng 2, interface wise we got 2 wic's in router 1, and 1 wic in router 2, the 2 routers can ping each other, building 2 can browse the web but just can't see inside the lan in bldng1, we suspect it's our firewall.
