Hi,
I need to get the CHASSIS serial number from approximately 50 remote sites, and other than going to look at the back of all the routers is there an IOS cmd to do this - I can't find one anywhere?!?!?
Cheers for someones help,
PS. "show version" only shows the processor board serial number!

Have a look at: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/477/SNMP/chassis.shtml

There is no way to get the external serial number via any command on a router. It is not coded into the device. The only way is to get the SN from the back of the device and add to the config the snmp-server chassis-id. I even tried to get Cisco to provide me with a mapping of the processor board id to the external chassis SN but they were not able to provide this info. If that mapping were avalable it would be easy to write a program to log into the router, do a show ver, capture the SN and add the chassis-id command. 3500 switched do show the external SN in a show version.
