Hello,

I urgently need to know the differences between the 2950 EI and the SI.

I need this info urgently in order to make a purchasing decision.

EI gives you better QoS, ACL features, and wider VLAN ranges.

Since 2950's are meant to be used as edge switches, I wouldn't spend too much money on them.

Hi,

Here are a couple of links to the data sheets for the SI and EI images:

From the Release notes (http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat2950/12122ea7/ol8122.htm#wp36950):

"The Catalyst 2950 switch is supported by either the standard software image (SI) or the enhanced software image (EI). The Catalyst 2950 Long-Reach Ethernet (LRE) and Catalyst 2955 switches are supported only by the EI. The Catalyst 2940 switch supports some of the features supported by a Catalyst 2950 switch.

The EI provides a richer set of features, including access control lists (ACLs), enhanced quality of service (QoS) features, and extended-range VLANs. The cryptographic SI and EI support the Secure Shell Version 2 (SSHv2) protocol. "

Hope this helps. Please rate helpful posts.

Thanks for your reply to my post.

can you do VoIP with the standard Image. Just realised the SI cannot do policy-map. Is VoIP ok with the SI ?

VoIP with the 2950 SI is not a problem. VoIP packets are just IP. Note that you will NOT get 802.3af (PoE - Power over Ethernet).
