Why can we only have one VLAN active at a time. If we do a no shut on a VLAN that's down, it will bring it up, but will also shutdown the active VLAN.

There are fa ports assigned to all VLAN's in question.

2950 is a layer 2 switch only and there is no benefit of having more than one VLAN interface up/up

M- The vlans interfaces that you configure in conf t mode are for managment. You are allowed a single management VLAN in the switch. So, by design when you have more than one configured, the last one brought up will be up and all others will be put into a shutdown state.

The VLANs associated with your ports are configured in the VLAN database. This is a separate tool within the IOS.

In orderr to configure a new vlan:

type in the command - vlan database

set your vtp mode (if required) - vtp domain {name},{client},{server},{transparent}

configure your first vlan - vlan ### name {name}

exit

your first vlan is configured, now you can assign the vlan to a port, or if you have the vlan already assigned to a port, that port will now become operational.

this is only layer 2 switch so only one interface vlan can be up at any time and that's only for management purpose like remote telnet to the switch. Switch can have multiple vlans and interface vlan doesn;t have to up or created for the other vlans to be up and ports to be functional..
