3524s - How to add another VLAN for Management

Within our 3524 workgroup switches we noticed the inability to add another VLAN. Queston: Can we add another VLAN, i.e. VLAN 500, to be used for Management only, instead of using the VLAN 1?

You sure can. Use the keyword "management" under interface vlan 500. This will shut down interface vlan 1 and interface vlan 500 will be up/up

Re: 3524s - How to add another VLAN for Management

You can have only one management vlan, either vlan 500 or vlan 1.

In case of 3524, do the following

config t

3524 (config)# interface vlan 500

3524(config-if)#management

This will put the previous management vlan (that is vlan 1 by default) to shutdown state.

Re: 3524s - How to add another VLAN for Management

On your switch, issue the comand "show vtp status". If your switch is in client mode, you can't add VLANs, they must be learned from a VTP server elsewhere in your network. The output below is from one of my 3524s in client mode.

HOSTNAME#sh vtp status

VTP Version : 2

Configuration Revision : 53

Maximum VLANs supported locally : 254

Number of existing VLANs : 29

VTP Operating Mode : Client

VTP Domain Name : VTP1

VTP Pruning Mode : Enabled

VTP V2 Mode : Enabled

VTP Traps Generation : Disabled

MD5 digest : 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00

Re: 3524s - How to add another VLAN for Management

Thanks...the problem was more related to IOS Version. In older versions, i.e. 11.2(8) only one VLAN can be configured on this switch at a time. The switches with IOS version 12.x.wc.... are fine... Time to upgrade the legacy IOS and add the VLAN Management correctly. Thanks for all the timely input!!!
