3550-emi 12g cable requirements

We just purchased the 3550-emi 12g (Cisco Catalyst 3550-12G Switch— 10 GBIC-based Gigabit Ethernet ports and 2 10/100/1000BaseT ports). We

want to connect 2 of these devices via the 1000Base T ports. I checked

the cable requirements and I just want to be sure that we can do that

using a standard cat5 crossover cable. If not, could you supply a url

for the cable requirements and wiring diagram.

Thanks.

You will have to cross the other pairs too. Normal croos will not work.

This is not correct. You can use x-over cables where only 1,2,3,6 us used. We're using it and it is according to doc. on cco. If there is other recommondations, please inform me.

Check the following link. Cisco too recommends four twisted-pair, crossover Category 5 cabling for 1000BaseT ports. Are you sure you are getting a speed of 1000Mbps?

Re: 3550-emi 12g cable requirements

Yes, the links is 1000Mbps/full. See:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/hw/switches/ps646/products_installation_guide_chapter09186a008007d160.html

but I agree that four twisted-pair should be used. Could be working in our case since the switches is locaded next to each other.

Thanks for the information. I thought the normal cross over doesn't work. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: 3550-emi 12g cable requirements

I'm also very sorry for the confusion. When you posted your info. about using 4 pair I had to check my cables and I'm using all 4 pairs. I tested with using only 2 pair and IT IS NOT WORKING either for 10, 100 or 1000. You are correct.
