3550 port problem

Hi

I have got 2 new cat 3550 switches.

I have got one at each building.I have it configured as a routed port on both switches. One port on each switch connected to a line of site laser.

The problem I am having is that the port is not picking up the laser. It shows as down down.

Both ports are configured as full duplex 100mb.

Even when I remove the routed hop configuration it still does not pick up the on the ports.

When I put in a 3com switch it seems to pick up the ports and it works.

Can soemone at Cisco please help understand why the switch is not picking up the laser units. It just shows down down with config or without. When I patch in anything else into the layer 3 switches it picks it up fine eg wireless radio and servers etc.

The IOS I am running is

Hi,

Could you show the relevant interface configuration that you have on your switches and the show interface command.

Thanks

Re: 3550 port problem

Don't you need a "no shutdown" command on each interface?

New Member

Re: 3550 port problem

The no shut commaand is already applied.

It would not say down down if it was shut.

It would say admintratively down down....

Re: 3550 port problem

Are you using a straight through or cross over cable from the switch to the laser?

I wonder if configuring no switchport changes the cabling requirements so that port is now an uplink port?

Re: 3550 port problem

Hi

I think its crossover, but I have removed the no switchport command and it still dows not work.

mmmmmmm

Still cant find the problem.

Re: 3550 port problem

What's the LED status of the port. If its not glowing, it could be a problem with the cable. Try changing the cable that you are using. Also try making the duplex and speed as auto.

Re: 3550 port problem

Hi

I have tried all these things before already.

When I put in a 3com switch it comes up no probs.

When i put the cisco 3550 switches in it does not come up.Tried different ports as well. These 3550

are brand new and it picks up all other devices.

I am starting to think that there is some sort of incompatibility with the Laser units and the cisco 3550.

If anyone from cisco knows of any incompatibility between laser line of site unites and cisco switches

your help or guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 3550 port problem

From my reading 'no switchport' configures the port layer 3.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/hw/switches/ps646/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a008014f345.html#1020563

Maybe the 3Com auto-detects if the port is normal or uplink. Suggest you try different cables ie. if using a crossover cable, try straight through cable.

Re: 3550 port problem

If you try the laser in a port which is configured as a switchport, does it come up?

If so try creating a seperate vlan at each end of the link i.e. vlan 10.

Then on the interface at each end:-

no ip address

switchport mode access

switchport access vlan 10

no shut

Next create an interface vlan 10:-

int vlan 10

ip address x.x.x.x

See if this works.

Re: 3550 port problem

Hi

I have downgraded the IOS on the 3550 from

c3550-i5q3l2-mz.121-14.EA1.bin to c3550-i5q3l2-mz.121-11.EA1.bin.

Since I did that the port connecting to the laser has come up.There must be a bug in the latest IOS which does not bring port up when connecting laser line of site units. Not sure....

Now that it is up up on both sides m y routed hop is not working.I cant ping the other sides port.

My radio link has the same config on the samew switch with different ip addresses and I can ping the other side no probs, but with the Laser units I cant ping the other side even though the port is up.

Really weird. Is this another bug or am i doing something wrong.I basically want eigrp to pick up the 2 links ie the radio and laser and let it pick the best successor which is the laser because the metric is better and let the radio be the feasible successor....Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 3550 port problem

Anyone at Cisco seen this before?

Re: 3550 port problem

problem resolved.

The Laser engineers had crimped the cable incorrectly and there was a fault on the interface card on the wireless. But it does not work with 12.1.14. It works with 12.1.11 on the 3550.
