3640 and Fibre

I am trying to use a 3640 router as a gateway router for a new fibre line I have installed. This router was previously used as a gateway router for a T1 line. Can this be done. The fibre line terminated as an RJ45 connection.

Appreciate someone helping me on this. I am new to this stuff.

Re: 3640 and Fibre

When you say Fiber do you mean its an optical circuit, like an OC3 or do you mean Gigabit Ethernet? If its terminated as an Rj45, find out what the circuit is, as in T1, DS3, etc.

Then you will need a WIC card that supports that type of circuit, if it is a T1, then since it supported a T1 in the past, you may have that WIC already.

If the Fiber is a point to point connection, between say your office and the building across the street, you might be better off useing a switch.
